Veterans Day ~ Thank You To All Who Have Served~

Melville Morrison Smith
64th Depot Battery
Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force

My Grandfather wanted so badly to serve along side his older brothers, Ralph, Albert and James, that in 1916 he lied about his age ( Attestation paper #1) stating his birth year was 1898, he was actually only 15 years old at the time. He was caught in his lie and sent home, but returned a year later and enlisted once again ( Attestation paper #2).
The following year  his brother Harold enlisted bringing the total of Smith Brothers fighting in WWI to  five.

  1. I have a great-uncle who also lied about his age to serve in WWI. Did the Smith brothers all survive? (I hope!)

  2. Hi Nancy, Yep all 5 returned home to Canada at the end of the war :)
