Sentimental Sunday ~ Jack Richard Smith I

Sunday, August 08, 2010

I got up this morning at 6 A.M. made a pot of coffee and with no plans for the day, I sat down at my computer and started going through my emails, sorting genealogy and grave request and online bills into their correct folders, when I came across a fulfilled grave request notice. I had sent out my request a few weeks ago for my Uncle (thank you Larae Cox) who is buried in Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier California. I had forgotten all about it really. Sitting there looking at the grave stone, I cried a little and smiled a lot, remembering my Uncle and all the love and memories.

Surname Saturday ~ Smith~

Saturday, August 07, 2010

SMITH : Derived from the Anglo-Saxon "smitan," to smite or strike, SMITH and its derivations are an occupational name for a man who works with metal (smith or blacksmith), one of the earliest jobs for which specialist skills were required. It is a craft that was practiced in all countries, making the surname and its derivations the most common of all surnames. Smith still tops the list of most popular surnames in England and America, and is also a very common last name in Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Canada and Australia.
