Sepia Saturday~ 5 Men With 5 Hats

This Week's Sepia Saturday picture is again from Great Grandma's photo album, unfortunately it is also a mystery picture. There is no information in Mary Bella's album about who the 5 men are, I can only guess  they may be some more of the Imlah family, and the photo was taken in Aberdeen Scotland. The gentleman in the back row on the right seems to be wearing a hat that might have been worn by a Conductor or carman? The photo is badly worn and when handled it tends to peel away. I would love any tips on putting a date to the photo which might help me figure out who the mystery men are.

  1. What a great photo, do you think they are celebrating something, hence all the cigars? Yes the hat looks like an old style bus conducter hat, but is it too old for buses? Maybe a train.

  3. I adore the man standing on the left. What a great striped vest.

  4. Definitely a celebration, and the hats signify that they are wearing their best clothes too I think.

  5. I think the hat might be an old soldier's hat, perhaps from the Crimean era.

  6. great photo. I think the man at that back right wears a seaman's or boatman's hat. Similar to naval caps of the 19thC.

  7. These are wonderful characters. One of those shots where I wish I could have been in the room to hear the conversation after it was taken.

  8. As a collection of hats, I can't see how that can ever be beaten. Magnificent.

  9. What a photo! The poses remind me of a photo that I have of one of my ancestors - including cigars. A relative suggested to me that my photo might be my ancestor and his new business partners. Did you have anyone who started a business or a new enterprise of any type?

  11. Thanks everyone for stopping by :) You have given me some great ideas to search more on... I will now go back to my records and see if I cant find who the men might be, should I figure this one out I will let you all know.

  12. The photo itself looks so fragile - and the men in it look so solid and determined. Interesting contrast. I can't help with identifying (I don't even see a family resemblance among the men) or dating but you might be able to date by looking at newspapers to see if you can find drawings of men's clothing in ads, maybe beginning about 1890. Google newspapers might have old Scottish newspapers.... I notice that the man sitting on the left in front has a stripe down his pant leg. It reminds me of the uniforms worn by men who took people up and down in elevators years ago. I hope you can somehow find some answers.
